By Avery Matney

More than 60% of young, unmarried women live in households that qualify as being in poverty. Many young mothers will go through a welfare benefit program within three years of given birth to their child. While being a teen mom, it is hard to gain a successful education. This affects their ability to provide later in life. Teen mothers are found to not finish high school or likely to not complete college. In the past two decades, income for college graduates has risen 19% while the income for those who dropped out of high school has decreased by 29%. Young women dealing with teen pregnancy is difficult, but 1 in 5 teen men will go on to marry the mother of their children. Poverty has a negative effect on children. When a child is born with a mother who is 18 or younger, that child is at a higher risk of scoring “worse” on school readiness exams that include math and reading. Overall in the teen households, the resources are limited. The cause of many teen pregnancies is because young women are choosing to become mothers at a young stage in their life. Even if there are educational opportunities for children living in poverty, the level of education that a child receives if often lower.
