Poverty is a huge issue in the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma is one of the poorest states in the nation. Oklahoma’s poverty rate of 15.7% is above the national average of 13.2%. To be considered deprived by the federal standard, a family of four would have to have an income at or below $23,050 in 2012. More than half of Oklahoma countries have an average income at or below the federal poverty level. The divorce rate for Oklahoma women is the second highest in the nation. The harsh effects of poverty begin before babies are born and sticks with them throughout their adulthood. Kids who grow up in poverty are surrounded by a stress-filled environment and they do not receive the proper nutrition. Low income has been linked to the risk of health and education problems.
Effects of poverty on children:
When parents cannot afford the proper food a child needs, the chances of having a child with mal-nutrition increases. Many children receive multiple vaccines growing up. Vaccines are expensive and families with poverty usually are not able to afford them. The chances of diseases are higher in children whom live in poverty. Education is not very important. Small wage jobs are often encouraged. Poverty also influences many divorces. The child may be removed from the home or split from one parent. Some children are even put in orphanages. Hence the child lacking family love and care. Wealth can act as a moral booster. People with less money tend to be less stable. Children who suffer from poverty tend to have a negative attitude to life.
Effects of poverty in society:
Violence and criminal activities are linked to poverty affected societies, which encourages the need people must make money by unlawfully means. Wealthy people seem to be the happiest because having money provides comfort, therefore having money problems could lead to stress and unhappiness. Many families break up due to poverty, leading to arguments between family members.
An issue that needs to change:
Poverty is a huge problem, and not just in Oklahoma. There are so many organizations and resources that can help other families in their desperate time of need. Educating the community and shining a light on these issues is a vital part of solving the poverty crisis in Oklahoma. Volunteering time, money and donating to charities during the holidays is important, but impoverished families and individuals need support year-round.
